South Sudan’s performance at the recent UN Summit held in UN Headquarters in New York was mixed. On the one hand, the country’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, made a number of positive commitments, including to implement the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), to hold free and fair elections in 2023, and to protect human rights.
On the other hand, however, South Sudan’s human rights record remains poor, and there are serious concerns about the government’s commitment to implementing the R-ARCSS. The country is also facing a number of other challenges, including a humanitarian crisis, a failing economy, and widespread insecurity.
Overall, South Sudan’s performance at the UN Summit was seen as a step in the right direction, but there is still much work to be done before the country can achieve peace and prosperity.
Here is a more detailed look at some of the key commitments that President Kiir made at the UN Summit:
- Implementation of the R-ARCSS: President Kiir committed to implementing the R-ARCSS, which is a comprehensive peace agreement that was signed by all of South Sudan’s warring parties in 2018. The R-ARCSS calls for a transitional government of national unity, a ceasefire, and the integration of armed forces. However, the implementation of the R-ARCSS has been slow and difficult, and there have been repeated violations of the ceasefire.
- Holding free and fair elections: President Kiir committed to holding free and fair elections in 2024. This will be a critical test for the country’s democracy and its commitment to peace. However, there are a number of challenges that need to be addressed before elections can be held, such as the need to reform the electoral system and to ensure that all voters can register and vote freely.
- Protecting human rights: President Kiir committed to protecting human rights. This is important in light of the country’s poor human rights record. There have been numerous reports of human rights abuses by government forces and other armed groups, including killings, torture, and rape.
